Bill Hamel
At the helm of America’s progressive label, Sunkissed, and sister brand Teknology; Bill Hamel is a key player in today’s prog-house scene. Evolution, Mara and Simon ‘Breeder’ Noble are just a collection of Hamel’s past collaborators, and the forthcoming production plans with BT and Jan Johnston will have the prog-faction in utmost anticipation.

HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT THE REMIX OF MEZZ'S 'NO WAY OUT'?
Remixes are always the same. You get the vocals and parts time stretched to the tempo you want the remix to be, then you just write a new backing track from there.

ARE THERE ANY MORE HAMEL REMIXES IN THE PIPELINE?
I’ve just finished my remix of Lamb’s 'Gabriel'.
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE SUPPORTING BT ON HIS FLORIDA TOUR? HOW DID YOU MEET?
I’m totally blown away. We’ve been talking for about a year now on the phone. I had a DJ gig out in LA in January; he picked me up and took me out to eat sushi. Then he proposed the idea of me working on one of his forthcoming album tracks. I was blown away, and jumped at the opportunity.
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THIS BT / JAN JOHNSTON COLLABORATION?
I can’t get too detailed on this, but it’s exactly what you’d expect from the 2 of us in the studio - rocking percussion, lots of cool audio tricks, and top-notch production. The second song is even 10 times better. We were both freaking out in the studio as it was starting to take shape. I’m a huge BT fan and I think it’s easily one of his best productions to date. I can’t believe that I was a part of it! I’ve always thought the man was a genius, but know I know it for a fact. Many of the drum sounds were made from scratch using code based programs, which basically means that he was on his laptop typing in strings of code, and bad ass drums sounds were the result. Logic & Pro Tools are now merely the instruments used to glue and arrange all of the killer audio files together which were generated in extremely difficult code based programs. Most producers struggle to tap in to the depths and capabilities of Logic & Pro Tools.
YOU ARE SET TO WORK WITH SIMON NOBLE LATER THIS YEAR. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THIS RELEASE? ARE IS IT TRUE THAT IT’LL BE SIGNED TO PERFECTO?
Simon will be back over late summer. We’re tentatively working with Jan Johnson on producing her next single. The single is not tied in to one label.
ANY OTHER PLANS OUR PROG-HUNGRY VISITORS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
Just stayed tuned to: <A HREF=http://www.sunkissedrecords.com/ target=blank>www.sunkissedrecords.com</a>
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE SIX-DEAL CONTRACT WITH MINISTRY OF SOUND? PHAZON PHREQUENCY WAS THE FIRST RELEASE, ARE THE OTHERS IN THE PIPELINE?
Well it’s exactly that. I don’t have another single lined up as of yet. I do have plans though. I’ve found a very talented female singer in Orlando. We plan to hook up in September once I get my studio moved in to my new house. I want to write a bigger track than normal, something that will push the limits of my capabilities. I feel like I’ve learned 200% more that what I knew prior to working with BT. I’d like to try these new production methods out. I love the fact that Dirty Vegas’ “Days Go By” broke out in to the main stream. That is such a killer song, especially now that it’s everywhere you turn. It’s a very underground sounding track, but the vocal was so brilliant that it cracked the main stream. I think the radio is ready for more tracks like this. So I guess we’ll all just have to stand by and see what happens.
Thanks for your time…BH
Many thanks to Bill, and Brad at Sunkissed Records for arranging this interview.
