Gareth Emery celebrates 100 podcasts with party + worldwide broadcast
Updated: Monday 22nd, February 2010

It was back in March of 2006 that Gareth Emery became one of the very first adopters of podcasting electronic music to the world. Not one to be scared of breaking the mould, Gareth went ahead into virtually unknown territory and launched the suitably named ‘The Gareth Emery Podcast’.

Four years down the line and his podcast is now one of the most popular and well respected music downloads out there, an accolade that has been marked by having his podcast nominated for three consecutive years at the International Dance Music Awards for ‘Best Podcast’.

March 2010 sees Gareth’s podcast notch up the 100 episodes milestone. I caught up with him to find out how he plans to celebrate the landmark and what’s in store for the podcast.

T.nu: How will you celebrating your milestone 100th podcast?
Gareth: We'll be doing a live broadcast from Sankeys in Manchester (where we hold our Garuda nights), with myself and some of my favourite DJs on the bill. In additional to that, we are also working with AH.fm to broadcast the entire event live across the world, plus of course highlights will be on Episode 100 of the podcast itself the following week. Should be good!

T.nu: Apart from being one of the first dance music podcasts, what has made your podcast so successful?
Gareth: Diversity has helped I think. Right from the off, I didn't want to be restrictive about the music I was playing, so even though I'm primarily associated with trance, I'm happy to play chill-out / downtempo, house, techno, and even some drum & bass on occasion - whatever really, as long as it's basically electronic music, and it's good. This definitely took some listeners by surprise at the start, but by now, anyone who is a regular listener is used to the occasional curveball, and people generally appreciative hearing something different from time-to-time. It's also very short and sweet - the tracks aren't played for their full running time and they're generally not mixed either, so you can hear 17-18 new tracks in 80 minutes or so. It doesn't take your whole life up.

T.nu: Did you ever envisage the podcast gaining the stature that it holds today when you started it?
Gareth: Not really no, because podcasting wasn't a hugely popular way of people accessing music back in 2006 when I first started it. However, it did seem to gather momentum relatively quickly, and it seems to have grown alongside me. We seem to be constantly upgrading our servers to cope with the growing demand, and it's been brilliant to watch how things have evolved and grown over the years. Originally, everyone was downloading at their desktop PCs whereas nowadays, people are increasingly accessing it via iPods and iPhones... I've always been interested by the way people access music, and look forward to it continuing to evolve over the coming years. But yeah, back in 2006 I didn't really imagine people coming to shows holding up signs with some of my better known phrases on them, but it's happened quite a lot this year!

T.nu: What’s in store for The Gareth Emery Podcast in 2010?
Gareth: We won't be changing the format too much; it's worked well up until now - just great music and interesting guests on the phone. We do have one other rather exciting development not directly related to the podcast but similar, but unfortunately I'm barred from talking about it now. Sorry!

T.nu: Many thanks, and congrats on 100 episodes!
Gareth: Cheers guys - turn it up!
