Mat Zo - Nuclear Fusion

Mat Zo has quickly become one of the fastest growing stars that the scene has to offer. As many of you are already familiar, he has been hailed as the best new name by many top producers and DJs alike in this year's DJ Mag poll. His latest effort comes in the form of the unique and eclectic "Nuclear Fusion," which is backed up by a lush mix from Armada's new favorite son Rex Mundi. Let's dive on in, shall we?

Original Mix

Driving, clean yet quirky percs pave the way for a storming sidechained bassline and some nifty synth work. A piano-like lead drops in with the introduction of a fresh-sounding chord progression. The lush break boasts breakbeats, lush pads and a subtle piano. A massive buildup sweeps in the chorus which features a pretty nifty synth arpeggio lead, which succumbs to the melodic elements of the breakdown. All in all an addictive prog-trance fusion with some awesome defining features. If you like some rawness to your trance, this is your thing!

Rex Mundi Remix

Focusing more on atmosphere, Rex draws out the intro with filtering stuttering synths, a subtle pad, a bass pad and some cool atmospheric FX while the percussion slowly (and I mean slowly) assembles. A brief pause with some huge sweeps which usher in the original theme and its piano riff. The track basically builds up from scratch once again and reintroduces the theme about a minute later. An actual breakdown emerges more than halfway through, focusing on some lush pads and piano leads. If you're after something smoother and perhaps cleaner, this may be your thing. The track seems to get a bit old by the 5 minute mark and even after the breakdown it doesn't feel like it's worth the wait.

Conclusion

The original stands out as a rather original production with great ideas and a unique sound. Rex Mundi's offering drags on a bit longer than it should before introducing the payoff, which occurs about seven minutes into the track. 4/5 stars overall for this release.
