Sunny Lax - Misgrey
Updated: Monday 29th, March 2010
Sunny Lax has built his career by releasing hit after hit through Anjunabeats, most notably with the infamous "P.U.M.A." Lax is back again with a solid proggy uplifting number titled "Misgrey." Adam Nickey (who has recently been quite busy himself) steps up to lend a hand at remixing Sunny's tune. The results:
Original Mix
"Misgrey" starts out with tough, punchy percussion and spacey FX. A shuffled bassline soon filters into view. The track dives into a break, hinting the theme but quickly drops out to kick in a driving bassline / pluck section. What a tease! Building back up somewhat, the tune enters the full breakdown, featuring more FX, a haunting vocal riff and the theme, which is driven by stuttering saws and squares and boosted by a nice bass pad. The chorus kicks in without much of a hitch and it's catchy, playful and well, simply epic! After the chorus ends, the driving bassline bit from the beginning kicks in and the track slowly disassembles from there. Compared to "Reborn" and his oldschool trance flavor, this seems to be a perfect balance between both of his sounds.
Adam Nickey Remix
Adam ups the pace as expected, starting it off with driving drums, FX and an approaching bassline. The energy is present right from the start. Plucks, rough saws and pads begin to work their way in before the breakdown drops in. Adam adjusts the theme a bit and features a drawn out piano section during the early stage of the break. Once the Kandi-like lead appears, the track begins to build up and the chorus emerges. Pads, piano, drums, bass and the lead dominate the chorus, creating an uplifting atmosphere in the usual Nickey flavor. Overall a good effort, although perhaps a bit too much piano.
Conclusion
Both mixes offer something different. Personally I'm leaning towards the original as it offered a very unique and captivating experience, however the Nickey remix is perfect for peak-time moments. Overall a great release and worth checking out! 4.5/5
